I have many fond memories of Quake 3 multiplayer. There were regular afternoon matches in the GameSpy offices and countless insta-gib marathons on "The Longest Yard" (the jumpy space map). There was the classic PlanetQuake/GameSpy CTF match against id Software, and my own attempts to get through the QuakeCon tournaments in 1999 and 2000 (I actually won some heats and made the 1v1s one year). I even played our CEO on my initial interview at GameSpy. In short, I played a LOT of Quake 3.So I couldn't help keep a smile off my face as I sat down and took my first turns with Quake 4's multiplayer, on display and playable for the first time here at QuakeCon 2005. With a 12-person network setup, I spent about 2 hours deathmatching (and playing a little CTF) a game that plays very much like Quake 3 with the graphical splendor of the DOOM 3 engine. For some people, it might be just the makeover needed to get them excited in deathmatch again. Most of our Quake 4 multiplayer playtesting was done on a single map called "The Fragging Yard." (We believe it's labeled Q4DM1, if you care about such things.) The map had a significant vertical aspect to it, with a main courtyard overlooked by a few levels of paths and jump pads leading in every direction. Although the count on deathmatch maps is far from finalized, it appears there are nine at the moment, each of which is themed either for the marines or the Strogg. (The Fragging Yard was a Strogg base). Quake 4's arsenal seems like a best-of from the three previous Quake games: you start with the gauntlet and machinegun, and the map also contained a shotgun, a remade hyperblaster (returning from Quake 2, possibly replacing the plasma gun), a nailgun (which has a startup time reminiscent of Quake 2's chaingun), and lightning gun. Of course, it wouldn't be a Quake game without a rocket launcher, which felt similar to Quake 3's. (Rocket jumping is back.) Rounding out the map were a grenade launcher and railgun; there's still a thrill to be had picking someone off mid-air while there's a crowd watching. Although a new BFG should be appearing in Quake 4, it was absent from this particular level. Aside from the graphical upgrade with the DOOM 3 engine, it was hard not to be reminded of Quake 3 at every corner. Speed for running, rockets and jump pads felt close to its predecessor, so if you were hoping for Quakeworld speeds, it looks like you're out of luck. Health bubbles and armor suits are near-identical to those from Quake 3, as are the awards you get rail shots and melee kills. (A few new awards are in the works, like the "Rocket Sauce" award, for getting killed the most with the rocket launcher.) In addition to the new multiplayer maps, id and Raven have also hinted there should be some remakes of a few classic Quake maps in Quake 4. Among them is Q3tourney6, which was the final boss map from Quake 3; it appears some extra platforms are being added to make things a little more interesting. A remake of Q3DM17 - "The Longest Yard" - may find its way into Quake 4, and there's the possibility that "The Edge" (from Quake 2) could get the upgrade treatment as well. (Raven is quick to point out that none of this is finalized, however, so don't hold them to this.) Aside from deathmatch, Quake 4's multiplayer should have a few other modes. Basic Capture the Flag is first on the list, with a reported 5 maps in the works for release. There's also an "Arena CTF" planned, which uses the powerups and runes from the Quake III: Team Arena expansion pack. One of the most interesting possibilities is the tourney mode, which is already in the game. Instead of two players going 1v1 and everyone else watching, several 1v1s happen on a map at once, with the winners moving on to face each other, and the losers able to watch or play other 1v1s against each other. It should be interesting to see how gamers react to Quake 4's deathmatch. For some, we suspect it could be too much of the same-old same-old to get excited about. For others who have been waiting patiently for a proper heir to Quake 3's throne as the deathmatch game of choice (I love UT 2004, but not as a 1v1 tourney game), this could be just what Dr. Frag ordered. Sadly, it doesn't seem there are any plans to release a "q4test" as a sneak peek, but we're also getting the vibe that Quake 4 might not be as far off as people think. Me? I've already won four of the six 12-person matches I've played, so I'm headed back to the show floor for more. I'm getting in while the fragging's good.
K£¥RÖ Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 OMG...
Metallan Posted August 13, 2005 Report Posted August 13, 2005 Uy mae!
