My Starcraft id was Mr.X, i switched to Insomnia when i started with war3. Grrrr... Name: Guillaume Patry Clan(s): AMD PROFILE At the WCGC, when all the players were using the on-site practice/internet access room during the games, a queue started to form. Eventually snaking around half the room, it was composed of Korean children on a school trip, waiting for an autograph from French-Canadian professional Starcraft player, Grrr… One of the first professional gamers, Guillaume Patry moved to Korea five years ago to play Starcraft for a living. He won dozens of tournaments in the first couple of years, and is still a force to be reckoned with, as one of only two western pro-gamers who can honestly say they have a chance at winning things. It’s a measure of his popularity and success that he appeared on a TV show where a celebrity does a job completely out of their normal way of life for a week, with the cameras following them. He thatched roofs for a week and got the biggest ever audience figures. With endorsements, a book, scores of tournaments wins, one of the most lucrative contracts, and celebrity, what gamer has been more successful? When you consider that he led the way for not just other Western gamers to play Starcraft, but also influenced tens or hundreds of thousands of Koreans in the way they play, practice and compete at the game, it’s hard to imagine how any other gamer could beat Grrrr… in this poll. MaDFroG Name: Fredrik Johansson Clan(s): Schroet Kommando PROFILE Compared to Korea, Europe is in the stone age of gaming. In Korea there's big money in gaming. Huge sponsorship deals secure a living for a number of players, you can actually speak of 'crowds' spectating games and they have even TV stations broadcasting games 24/7. Only a few westerners have made it to Korea. In WarCraft III it is only four gamers, all from clan SK. They signed a contract for six months to play there. Only one of them stayed in Korea after that time: Fredrik 'MadFrog' Johansson. MadFrog has made himself a name here in Europe when he came in second at ESWC, leaving behind players like Insomnia or ShowTime. In Korea, two first places in important 1v1 cups earned him respect there. One of them was the Blizzard Invite tournament in which he managed to take home $25,000 against some fierce opponents. Now he teamed up with a top clan and signed contracts with leagues to compete in and got himself sponsors. He's what you'd call a pro-gamer. MadFrog comes from a background of Starcraft. After the release of WarCraft III he switched games and soon joined SK. He did well in many European tournaments and with his Undeads he was always capable of a surprise. Then came Intel's offer to send four players down to Korea. They accepted and the world looked curiously forward to how they'd do there. The rest is history. Edited March 22, 2004 by JAAC
