Trilogy of Trilogies (Star Wars)

The best and the worst of Star Wars games and what's coming up More than 50 video and computer games have worn the Star Wars name, from 1982's The Empire Strikes Back on the ancient Atari 2600 (is that blocky blob supposed to be a Snowspeeder?) to Star Wars Battlefront, released in September to coincide with the release of the Star Wars trilogy on DVD.Some of these titles are bona fide gaming classics, others reek worse than Jar-Jar Binks wallowing in bantha poo-doo. So with Star Wars on our minds, here's our trilogy of trilogies: the three best games, the three worst games and three upcoming titles we're stoked about.THE BEST OF THE BEST:- X-WING (1992, for PC and Macintosh) - Wing Commander who? The first Star Wars game for the PC was a space combat sim that allowed us to strap in with an Artoo unit and blow up the Death Star. The very cool Star Wars arcade game aside, this is what fans of the flicks had been waiting for since 1977.While there were expansion packs and sequels (most notably TIE Fighter two years later), it's the original that still holds a special place in our Hoth-like frozen hearts.- JEDI KNIGHT II: JEDI OUTCAST (2002, for PC, Xbox and GameCube) - First-person shooters were given a shot in the arm when Dark Forces came out on the PC in 1994, and a boot in the rear when the amazing-for-its-time Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II landed on our 'puters two years later. But Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast was the pinnacle of this series, a first-person shooter so firmly embedded in Star Wars lore that it felt like an extension of the movies.- STAR WARS: KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC (2003, for the Xbox and PC) - The RPG geniuses at Edmonton-based BioWare Corp. showed they could take their prowess beyond the dungeon with this gem, set 4,000 years before the events of the films. While the graphics are a little dodgy, especially in the Xbox version, it remains not only the best Star Wars game but one of the best games of recent years, period.THE WORST OF THE WORST:- STAR WARS REBELLION (1997, for the PC) - A grand strategy title in the vein of Masters of Orion, Star Wars Rebellion looked terrible, was thuddingly dull to play and had an interface that would have baffled the mind of even the keenest Jedi.- FORCE COMMANDER (2000, for the PC) - Note to LucasArts: don't make any more Star Wars-based strategy games, m'kay? As one of the first-ever 3-D real-time strategy games, Force Commander's brutal camera control sunk it right out of the gate, and those who suffered with it for a while found it ugly, unpolished and buggy to boot.- OBI-WAN (2001, for Xbox) - When Obi-Wan was first announced, fans assumed it would be a spiritual successor to the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games. Then the PC version was cancelled and the remains got dumped into a crappy Xbox-exclusive release. The voice acting is high comedy, though, especially the guy trying to do Ewan McGregor.THREE TO WATCH OUT FOR:- STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT (out September 21, Xbox and PS2) - Take Battlefield: 1942 into the Star Wars universe, and this is what you get. An Xbox demo level on the trilogy DVD set lets you duke it out in the Endor forest, and it's an absolute chaotic blast to play. This one's gonna be huge.- STAR WARS REPUBLIC COMMANDO (Feb. 2005, for PC and Xbox) - Imagine Rainbow Six with Clone Troopers and you've got this squad-based first-person shooter that sees you leading a small team of covert operatives, Star Wars-style.- STAR WARS: EPISODE III (May 2005, for Xbox and PS2) - The prequel films' lightsaber duel co-ordinator is heavily involved in the production of this action game, due out when Episode III hits theatres next spring. A nifty featurette on the making of the game is included on the DVD set. Fuente:CanoeNetwork
